Moora’s Yued Elders call for help to address drug-use challenges
Media statement
Yued Elders meeting in Moora on Wednesday, 14 May 2025 have called for change from their community and for help from the Cook government to reduce the impact of illicit drug-use in the town.
Yued have expressed particular concern about the prevalence of methamphetamine in the town, but are also concerned about alcohol and cannabis.
The Elders have issued a challenge to their community: Nyoongahs must stop selling drugs that are killing Nyoongahs.
In addition, Yued are asking for Aboriginal-led drug and alcohol counselling services and mental health services to be based and delivered in Moora.
Comments attributable to Gail Beck OAM, Chairperson, Yued Aboriginal Corporation
"Our Elders have made it really clear that Nyoongahs should stop killing each other through the drug trade.
“Meth is insidious and is driving a wedge between us. It’s making it impossible to pass down traditional knowledge to the younger people.
“Keeping this hush-hush in the community hasn’t worked. Nyoongahs selling meth are selling out our people.
“Giving information to police about Nyoongah people and anyone else profiting off the misery of our mob isn’t anti-Nyoongah, it’s one of the only ways we can save ourselves.
“If Nyoongahs in Moora know anyone is selling this poison they should let the police know.
"Our future generations need us to be united in strength to stamp out these introduced poisons that are killing our people."
